If you venture out by yourself to gather leftover vegetables from a field, picking over an already harvested potato patch in, say, the Northampton Meadows, you’ll most likely do it alone.

Two recent afternoons, both clear and warm, no one else was on the dirt roads lacing the floodplains between the Connecticut River to the east and Interstate 91 to the west. No one, that is, except farmers from Szawlowski Potato Farms in Hatfield and others from Valley Spud over in Hadley, who were harvesting then trucking away potatoes by the ton.
