Teens Making a Difference
By Sarah Bate

At Rachel’s Table, our commitment to teen volunteers goes beyond service—it’s about investing in the future. By training and empowering the next generation, we’re not just addressing today’s needs but also sowing the seeds for a brighter tomorrow. These young volunteers gain invaluable experience that extends far beyond college applications and job prospects. Volunteering with RTWM offers an educational experience, enriched by peer-to-peer learning and the opportunity to interact with diverse communities. It also provides mental health benefits, as volunteering is a proven method for reducing anxiety and depression in teens. For Rachel’s Table, these teens represent the future of our organization—potential future board members and advocates who will carry our mission forward. By nurturing their growth, we’re ensuring that our impact will continue to flourish for years to come.

Getting to work so closely with the teens and the teen board officers, I am frequently inspired by their dedication, curiosity and empathy. I have realized that I am so lucky to get to witness their program firsthand, while a lot of our volunteers only get to read about them in the newsletter or see what they are doing through social media posts. At events and meetings they are equally serious and curious about the topics discussed, no one is too cool for Rachels Table. Seeing them take initiative in service projects and respect their teen facilitators is something that I have never seen when working with teens before!  The teens’ unique spark and dedication are apparent in their WWLP In Focus segment where past President and Vice President Franza and Melina talk about their experiences on the teen board and what it means to them. Please take a moment to enjoy:

Unique and integral to the Teen Board is peer-to-peer learning.  At Teen Board meetings and events, the teens themselves facilitate discussions and lead activities, creating an environment where they can learn from one another. As I write this, the Teen Board Officers are busy planning an exciting year of events and activities. This school year is especially significant because it includes the Hunger Awareness Artsfest—a biannual program designed to encourage young people to explore the topic of food insecurity through creative expression. Be sure to check out previous Artsfest galleries here and stay tuned for more information about this impactful event!

The Teen Board’s programming will kick off again in September, with meetings held twice a month. If you know a teen—or are one—interested in joining the Teen Board, we encourage you to fill out this form: feedwma.org/give-time. Our first service event of the year will be filling backpacks for the Holyoke Backpack Program, with more details to follow.

As we prepare for another year of growth and service, I’m continually reminded of the incredible potential these teens bring to Rachel’s Table. Their passion and commitment inspire all of us to strive for a brighter future. Together, we’re not just meeting the needs of today—we’re building the foundation for tomorrow.
